Just got back 10 old gold coins from ANACS

Sent in on the "cheap rate - long wait" situation for world gold coins.

They were (10) coins - 1810 to 1813 - 20 Franc Napoleans from Lille & Paris mints -

1813 - 3
1812 - 6 with 3 from Lille (W)
1810 - 1

9 came back EF45s - 1 came back AU53

The reason I did it was that any gold coin prior to the 1830s really goes for a heck of a lot money - usually - and these common as given out the soldiers fighting for the FROGS against the world - PLUS

America had the War of 1812
Madison was president
1812 invasion by French into Russia total disastrous historically

And one of them had graffiti 1812-W (Lille)
Guess the soldier wrote his name on the coin?

Anyway, in the future I may raffle them off on FEE-BAY.

Just mentioned it to give a few of you some extra ideas for the future.
Mainly, slab up the old things which makes them NUMISMATICS versus the old bullion thingie.

Best wishes,

HS

Figure about $25 per coin. So you have to ask yourself what the pay-off should be down-the-road.

Once authenticated one can LIST it on different type sites - or in COIN trade type places.

Also for down the road you have an idea about how the system works. I have used PCGS, NGC, and ANACS.

Frankly, NGC and ANACS both - beat PCGS for service - sadly PCGS is only 40 miles away in Newport Beach area. Back in 1966 (I can't believe 42 years ago!) I started there as a civil serpent. I had to threaten PCGS so they could find my lost (12) $20 Saints a few years back. Then they did not do what their contract said they would ; so now I JUST buy their coins already encapsulated - but I hear the PHONIES in China (per new Coin World Mag) like to make up PCGS coins so BEWARE.

You have to join the clubs for NGC & PCGS - ANACS is more open to the trade. ANACS is good for cleaned and problem coins - the other two send them back with toe-tags and body bags. :MIA::MIA::MIA:

I thought there was one fee that you could pay for the year?

I remember it not being that bad?

Silly question, but....

How do you know you got "your" coins back? They handle 1000's of coins. How do you know the one that came back is yours? Your story of the lost coins, even disturbs me more. I have a few nice oldies I'd like to have slabbed, but am concerned they may not come back. *sentimental value*

I like ANACS for problem coins also but PCGS has just started a new "genuine" designation that will slab problem coins and mark them genuine so no more body bags from PCGS.

ANACS has the best looking holder now. The top curves back so you can see the coin info from the top without having to take the slab out of your storage box. Very nice.

Also, there is a yearly fee for PCGS but that is just to get the privilege to submit coins directly to them and not use a dealer. There are also quarterly grading specials for members and some of the subscription levels have free grading for 4 or 8 coins.

I used that MEMBERSHIP at highest level for three years and they rather "burned me, "so I don't play with their "fire via send in" anymore. That's just me. After about 12 weeks I got my all coins back which had another encapulation and I was upgrading to PCGS and their quality and sadly ran into problems. I had pictures and remembered each coin - and frankly they graded them rather well. Imagine my thoughts of waiting to get back some 84 days (plus shipping) what was promised in 10 days. :4_1_72: Those 12 saints would retail for more than $20,000 today.

Just beware anyplace can make a mistake - but they did not give out their contracted complimentary send in coins certificate as the contracted to do - even after several calls. :Surrender: I found that their CHARACTER lacks a good business model - but still they have a good product very sadly,of course. :wink:Honestly, I still buy their encapulations - I just choose not to join their club. :36_1_32v:

Best wishes to all this Holiday Season,

HS
